![]() ![]() YOU cannot do everything a string player does (not even close)… if you lift your finger or release the sustain pedal, you have STOPPED bowing the strings and the sound stops. That gesture of pressing a key is equal to drawing the bow across the strings. You are bowing those strings by the gesture of “pressing” a key. Strings, Brass, etc (by design: “Self-Oscillating instruments)), when trying to emulate them on a keyboard behave as basically either ON or OFF. No matter if you are holding a key or not.no matter if you are holding the sustain pedal or not… percussion instruments cannot be held indefinitely. When a piano’s Amplitude Envelope reaches DECAY 2 LEVEL the sound has stopped. ![]() Tyros 2 patch Cubase generator#The sustain pedal in MIDI is “HOLD 1” it will keep the Ampitude Envelope Generator at a specific stage, if you press the pedal and the string envelope has reached DECAY 2 LEVEL and it is something other than a 0, the envelope will be held at that LEVEL until KEY-OFF or PEDAL OFF. Strings and organs do not have a NORMAL way to behave to a sustain pedal. That is true for all percussive behaviors.Īnd there is no “normally” when it comes to HOW instruments that in the real world do not have sustain pedals behave. If you want it to fade out like a piano, then you need to give it a “percussive” envelope. The article I linked you to will explain that. Hope it helps.ĭiscussion of Piano and Strings and Sustain Pedals, Oh My! Please see this thread for a similar discussion and my (rather detailed response). In the MOX synth engine this is defined by an envelope in terms of LEVEL and TIME settings (called the “envelope"). So how they behave gets into a discussion of something called the Amplitude Envelope Generator (AEG) or how loudness is set to change over time. Pianos do not sustain indefinitely… real Strings sustain as long as you bow them. As you know, in the real world “strings” don’t have sustain pedals… and when played alone, you normally want them to sustain as long as you hold the keys. In the PSR because it is not a synth, a decision was made (for you) that when you layer piano and strings - they simply make everything behave as a piano to the sustain pedal (makes life easy). The bad news is: you have to program it to do what you want. The good news is: It is programmable and can be set to behave any way that you desire. You will find the sustain function in a synthesizer is programmable - and that can be good / bad news. ![]()
